5 Ways to Have a Healthy Holiday Season

It’s the holiday season!! We all know what that means - parties, pageants, parades, people - lots and lots of people which also means lots and lots of germs. Fortunately staying healthy during the holidays doesn’t have to be another daunting task on your to-do list. A few simple steps can help keep you and your family healthy, so you can enjoy all the holiday fun.

5 Simple Steps To Stay Well This Holiday Season:

1) Wash your hands - Yes, it seems obvious, especially since Covid but it’s worth repeating. A Harvard study showed that washing your hands with soap for 20 seconds eliminates 99.9% of germs. So suds up!!

2) Regular Sleep - Inadequate sleep, even if it’s just a few nights a week, negatively impacts your immune system. Studies have shown that cytokines ( proteins used in your immune response) are released while you sleep. Without adequate rest, you are more likely to become sick when exposed to a virus and can have a longer recovery time.

3) Exercise - Exercise has long been proven to benefit your immune system. According to a study by the National Institute of Health, even small amounts of exercise release increased amounts of cellular antibodies. It also decreases stress hormones, that lower your immune response.

4) Anti-viral cleaning products - There has been an increase in “natural” or “clean” products in the last few years. While these products can have many benefits (I use some!) they are often anti-bacterial not anti-viral. Viruses not bacteria are usually the main source of illnesses such as the common cold, flu, and stomach issues. Please make sure you are using the right cleaner for the right illness - it matters!!

5) Stay Home - Again, since Covid happened this seems silly to reiterate. However, I think people are starting to forget. So here is your reminder: if you have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea - stay home!! If you are coughing make sure you at least cough into your elbow (not hand) or consider staying home or wearing a mask. Droplets from coughing can travel up to 6 feet, please don’t share.

I hope these easy tips help you and your family stay happy and healthy this holiday season!!
